Obituary for Adoniran "Gilfred" McKnight

Adoniran Gilfred McKnight
“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints. O Lord, truly I am your servant…you have freed me from my chains.” Psalms 116:15-16b
After fighting the good fight of faith, our beloved Adoniran Gilfred McKnight bravely transitioned from this life on Wednesday September 4, 2019.

Adoniran was born August 20, 1950 in Williamsburg County to Gillie and Laura Adamson McKnight. All who knew him affectionately called him “Gilfred”. His parents and his sister Diane McKnight Barr preceded him in death.

Adoniran Gilfred graduated from Cades High School in 1967. He attended Denmark Technical College and earned a degree in Electrical Technology. Shortly afterwards he joined the United States Army where he served for 20 years and retired with an honorable discharge. He went back to school and earned an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Florence Darlington Technical College and worked with South Carolina Department of Corrections until he retired again. While working at SC Department of Corrections he earned another degree in Heating and Air Technology at Williamsburg Technology Center. Adoniran Gilfred was a hard worker and he continued throughout his retirement in a lawn care service, which he worked diligently until he became ill.

Adoniran’s exceptional ability in track earned him a scholarship at Voorhees College. His skill and agility in baseball earned him tryouts with the Cincinnati Reds, but due to a knee injury he never fulfilled this long term dream. However his ability in baseball was well known in the community and boy could he run a base. In his younger years, not many of his peers could throw him or outrun him.

Adoniran Gilfred gave his life to the Lord at the age of 12 while growing up in Bethesda Episcopal Church. After his life in the military, he continued his membership to faithfully serve now known as Bethesda UMC in the capacity of treasurer for the church, UM Men as their treasurer and as an active member of the Prospect Masonic Lodge #404.

In 2001, Gilfred married Pallie Adams. He took his responsibilities as a husband, father, grandfather and brother seriously. He loved his family and extended family. Gilfred would look after his elderly aunts, calling them, checking on them and helping them whenever and however he could.

Love ones who will cherish his memory forever are: his faithful and loving wife, Pallie McKnight; his children, Marlin McKnight, LaKesha McKnight, Marlin S. McKnight; his sister, Redonia (James) Thomas; his brother, Wyman Glyn McKnight; His aunts, Ruth Adamson McKnight, Juanita Adamson Singletary, Mary Cooper McKnight and Queen Esther McKnight; his uncle, Gilmore McManus; his grandchildren, Malik, Destiny, Avion, Antwine, Amya, London; his in-laws, Nathaniel Bligen and others; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
