Reflections of Life

“The Lord is my Light and my Salvation; whom shall I fear. The Lord is the Strength of my Life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1

Herbert Lloyd Mouzon was born on September 07, 1930 in Salters, SC to the late Ineather Howard Mouzon and Frank Mouzon. He was one of six children, three of which preceded him in death, Leon, Artis, and Frank, Jr.

Herbert attended the public schools of Williamsburg County, graduating from Williamsburg County Training School (now known as C E Murray High School). Herbert furthered his education by attending Charleston Baptist College, Charleston, S.C.

Herbert was a member of Mt. Zion MB Church, where he held the position as a Deacon.

Herbert served in the Military; serving first in the Army and later the Air Force, earning the rank of Senior Master Sargent. He received various medals during his tenure of service, such as, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea); Non-Commissioned Officer Academy Graduate Ribbon with 1 device; Good Conduct Medal; Army with 3 Bronze loops; Korean Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters; Meritorious Service Medal; Air Force Commendation Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster; and the Army Commendation Medal. After his discharge, Herbert continued his work for the government as a Personnel Specialist.

As a teenager, Herbert enjoyed playing baseball as a favorite sport. He loved talking about things that happen in the past. In Mt. Zion MB Church, he was called the “Historian.” Herbert's favorite quote was, “Life Goes on!”

Herbert's gentle, giving, and loving spirit will forever be remembered in the hearts of those who love him most.

Those left to cherish his precious memories are: his son, Kevin (Valerie) Bowman of San Antonio, Texas; sister, Virginia E. Mouzon of Manhattan, NY.; brother, Rev. Leroy B. (Octavia) Mouzon of Philadelphia, Pa.; two granddaughters, Kia Bowman of Washington, D.C., and Kendra Bowman of San Antonio, Texas.; grandson, Gabrial Bowman of San Antonio, Texas; life-long friends, Deacon Leroy McClary and J.J. of San Antionio, Texas, and a host of nieces, nephews cousins and friends.

An old African proverb says, “It takes a village to raise a child”. It also takes a village to care for our senior citizens, and we would like to thank the following individuals that were part of Herbert Mouzon’s San Antonio village for the last 3 to 4 years of his life:

Mr. Joseph James, Gary Hawkins, Valerie and Kendra Bowman, Mr. Michael (from the VA), Ms. Andrea Spencer, Ms. Diana Askew, Mr. Steven Cooks, Mr. Maurice Barfield, Mr. Edward Lyons, Mr. Roland Gibson, Burke and Meagan Marold, Mr. Clark, The Staff at New Haven Senior Living Solutions, Dr. Ali (from the VA), The medical staff at Lackland AFB, and the staff at U Save Cleaners.
