Obituary for Ica Belle Barr

Mrs. Ica Belle Barr
Mrs. Barr, I.B. or Belle as she was known was the second oldest child of six children. She was born June 13, 1922 to the late Ishmael Graham and Pearl Cooper Graham.
Belle, as she was called, grew up in a loving and caring home. Her parents were leaders in the community and they enjoyed a happy life, on a large farm, located in the Wilson Chapel section of Williamsburg County. Belle’s father, Ishmael, read his newspaper weekly and emphasized knowledge and education for his children.

High School and College
Belle completed Tomlinson High School, and was one of only a few girls in the county who could drive a car. She drove herself and her siblings to school and participated in school activities. After graduation, she attended Allen University in Columbia, SC. until her father’s death. It was then, that she transferred to Morris College in Sumter, SC. and received her B.A. degree in Education. Later, she received a Master’s Degree in mathematics.
Mrs. Barr, Her Career and Her Life

During Mrs. Barr’s tenure, she was director of the Majorettes, drum majors, and flag bearers. While working as a teacher at Tomlinson, she became involved in many activities that helped the school and students. She was the bookkeeper for the entire school. In addition, to teaching 8th grade mathematics, she helped to organize the popular Tomlinson Talent Shows and worked with Homecoming activities and various Tomlinson events. She enjoyed her life at Tomlinson High School from being a student up to her retirement.
In the Kingstree community, Mrs. Barr also worked with Voter Registration, NAACP projects and Kingstree Town projects. At the same time, she was Superintendent of Greater Bethel AME Church School and worked with the Missionary Society of the church.
