Obituary for Laura Burgess Gamble

Laura Jane Gamble is at peace with God now, rejoicing in her happy, heavenly home.  On Wednesday, August 28, 2019 in Hartwood, Maryland, Laura slipped away with one of God’s angels.


Laura, the daughter of the late Ruther D. Burgess and the late Thomas Burgess, Sr., was born on March 22, 1955 in Williamsburg County, South Carolina.  At an early age, Laura accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church.


Laura attended Williamsburg-Blakely High School and graduated in the class of 1973.  In April 1974, Laura married her first husband, Jimmy Gamble. During their union, they had two children. Connie was born in 1974 and Yolanda was born in 1978.


Laura moved to Washington, D.C. in 1977.  In 1979, she began her Federal Government career as a fingerprint technician with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  In 1986, she was employed as a mail carrier with the United States Postal Service in Alexandria, Virginia until her passing.


Laura was a charter member of Landover Memorial Baptist Church (now Woodstream Church) since March 18, 1984, located in Mitchellville, Maryland.  During her tenure at Woodstream, Laura was a member of the Sanctuary Choir, Women’s Chorus, Sunday School, Small Group Ministry, Visitation Ministry and Nursing Home Ministry.  Laura also participated in the selling of the first mortgage bonds for the church.


Laura enjoyed baking cakes and cooking.  Her famous lasagna was always requested by family and friends.  She also enjoyed watching basketball and football games during the playoffs.


Laura was preceded in death by two sisters, Gertrude Salters and Janie Burgess; and brothers, James and George Burgess.
