Life Reflections

I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful.
II Timothy 4:7
Rufus, the eldest of five children from the union of the late John Elliott and Evelyn McClary Matthews was born October 24, 1937. On Tuesday, October 15, 2019, Rufus peacefully slipped into the arms of God, finishing the race and completing his earthly work.

“Boog”, as he was affectionately known, attended Williamsburg County Training School, currently known as C.E. Murray High School in Greeleyville, SC. After high school he relocated to Philadelphia, PA.

At an early age, Rufus accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior and joined Union Missionary Baptist Church. As an adult, he continued his Christian journey and was baptized at New Calvary Baptist Church, Philadelphia, PA under the leadership of the late Reverend Clarence McClary. Upon returning to South Carolina he reunited with Union Baptist Church.

On May 27, 1989, Rufus was united in holy matrimony to Lossie Dickerson Matthews.

Rufus was employed in the manufacturing industry – Globe Rubber Co and Lee Tires. Before returning to South Carolina, he was employed by Commodores Computer Company in West Chester, PA. In 1994, he moved back to SC where he worked as a custodian at Kingstree Senior High School until he developed health issues. He was a devoted and dedicated Staff of Dimery & Rogers Funeral Home over 20 years.

His job of a lifetime was as Site Manager at Greeleyville Re-cycle Center where he retired from earlier this year. He looked forward to the two days a week he worked at the recycling center and the mornings he met with the crew at McDonald’s. Fellowshipping with others was his passion.

Rufus was man who was well loved and respected by family, friends, and community alike. He stood tall, proud and stately and was very particular about his appearance. Rufus believe in what was right and was not about a lot of foolishness. Many would come to him for his “words of wisdom”.

While in Philadelphia he was a member of Blue Moon Lodge #5 and Royal Arch Masons. Boog was very active in the South Carolina Division of McDowell Parson Reunion and was honored at the 2015 reunion for his twenty years of dedicated service as Vice President & President. He loved his family. .

Rufus was preceded in death by his parents, John and Evelyn Matthews; his siblings, Phoebe Matthews Murrell, Louis and Lawrence Matthews.

Rufus leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted companion for 43 years, Lossie Matthews of the home; grandson whom he reared as his own, Brandon Matthews of Myrtle Beach, SC; son, Rodney Burgess Matthews of Landsdale, PA; three daughters, Robyn, Kelly and Brooke Matthews of Philadelphia, PA.; one brother, Ossie (Jacqueline) Matthews of Raleigh, NC; three additional grandchildren – Michael of Philadelphia, PA, Brittany of Harrisburg, PA and Adrianna of Austin, TX; one aunt, Geneva Stamp of Brooklyn, NY; one sister-in-law, Rebecca Matthews of New York and one brother-in-law, Emanuel Murrell of Sacramento, CA; two special cousins/caregivers – Catherine Keels & Gloria (Jessie) Brown; cousin reared as his brother – Rev.
