Obituary for Virginia E Mouzon

Reflections of Life

Mrs. Virginia Elayne Mouzon Clarke, daughter of the late Frank and Ineather Mouzon, was born on October 23, 1933 in Salters, SC. On Saturday, December 1, 2018, she peacefully entered into Eternal Rest at the Jewish Home in New York City, NY.

Virginia received her formal education from Williamsburg Training School (now known as C.E. Murray High School), where she was the 1953 Class Valedictorian; she attended South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, SC for one semester before moving to New York City, NY. While in New York, she worked not one, but two full-time eight hours jobs. Virginia was no stranger to hard work; as she attended night school, eventually earning an Associate’s Degree from Bronx Community College in New York City. She also worked in the health field, first becoming an LPN. Then, she went back to college to become an RN and began working as an RN at Harlem Hospital and later at Mt. Sinai Hospital, working the night shift. She then decided to do private duty nursing. In fact, she had so much business with private duty nursing, she started “farming” out nurses to help her, which created her own network.

Virginia had various interests, one of them being traveling, which she did extensively. Some of the places she visited were, Africa, Europe and South America, which was her favorite place to visit. Fashion was another one her hobbies, and she was an awesome designer and seamstress, even enrolling at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, NY. Virginia would go on 5th Avenue in NY to look in the windows at dresses, sketch them, and go home to make the dresses she saw. She was also an avid reader of books, periodicals, such as, the Atlantic Monthly and much more. She loved going to Schomburg Liberty in Harlem, NY to read periodicals. There was a candy store across the street from where she lived, they save newspapers for her, such as, the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, just to name a few. She picked them up and read each one; constantly surrounded herself with knowledge. Music was another interest of hers, favoring the genres of jazz, gospel, etc. She loved and had exotic animals, and was kindhearted and an inspiration to all. To know her was to love her. She will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Julian Clarke, and four brothers: Leon, Frank Jr., Artis and Herbert.

Those who are left to cherish her loving memory are: her brother, Rev. Leroy (Octavia) Mouzon of Philadelphia, PA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

The family would like to acknowledge the Union Baptist Church family for the love and care they’ve shown to Virginia during her time there.
